For my Facebook Group, I decided to utilize new member questions to filter through potential individuals that have interest in joining my group. The questions for this group are listed in the above graphic. I believe these questions create an understanding of the subject of the group for the potential new member while also giving me an idea of who they are and what they are looking for out of the group. This helps me aim content toward their preferences if they are admitted into the group. Additionally, I have the potential member read and agree to the Facebook group rules I have set for this group. Personally, if they do not agree to those rules, they will not be admitted. I believe in respect and safety for all of my members.

The Facebook group rules I have chosen for my group are, again, listed in the graphic above. The first three are sourced from the Facebook platform’s suggested rules for general groups. These rules include being kind, respectful, and courteous toward others. Additionally, I added my own rule to give credit where credit is due. With the group’s subject being home décor, a lot of the content is sourced from other websites and links. It is incredibly important to cite the information and give credit to the original source for anything my members are posting from other sites like Pinterest.

This is my first time moderating a Facebook group, or any online community. I encourage my members to respect other members and engage in the content. On my end, I do my best to utilize the features of the platform to make my job run smoothly and easily. I have prefaced that I utilized the rules and new member questions as features. However, the feature I utilize the most is the scheduling posts ahead of time. This feature allows me to create as much content as I want, then choose the day and time it posts. I am able to spend a couple hours creating content and then when the time comes, it rolls out into the group automatically. This allows me to only focus on engagement and growth on a daily basis without worrying about creating at the same time. This is how I do my best to stay ahead of the game.

Secondly, I focus about 80% of my time working on engagement within my group. There is not a post that rolls out that does not feature a prompt in some way. I like to include polls, questions, and other forms of engaging content that gives my members a path to navigate their engagement without having to think too hard. I want to keep the group fun and enjoyable, so I try to keep content simple and different so they continue to be interested and have fun with it.

While this is the first online community I have ever led, I am enjoying myself immensely. Moderating a group is not for the faint of heart, and I feel lucky to have the members within my group that I do. They are quick to engage and create their own content quite often. As I learn, I hope to continue to enjoy this group and learn even more ways to lead this community successfully.
