Affordable First-Time Homemaking

Affordable First-Time Homemaking is a Facebook Group I created to bring together an online community focusing on sharing in the experience of decorating and making a home for young adults. There, the community can discuss home décor inspiration, what it is like to realize curtains are much more expensive than expected, and décor sales are stores we all enjoy. I hope to build a community where we can all encourage one another’s creativity and share our cozy spaces we have made or are currently working on.

In an attempt to attract more attention to my new Facebook Group and build membership numbers, I have created three different posts across Facebook and Instagram to spread the word of the new group.

My first post consists of sharing the Group on my personal Facebook account. I know many people my own age that might be interested in the group and find the tips and community helpful for creating their first homes. I shared the description of the group and added in the comments if anyone wanted me to send them and invitation in the group, I would happily send one. I received 13 members from this post. I also went through all of my Facebook friends and sent out invitations to people who may enjoy the group. Of the 308 invitations I sent, I gained 119 members in the first 48 hours of my group.

Secondly, I went to my Instagram, where I believe I have more reach. I published a story on both of my accounts showing a screenshot of the group, the name of the group, and an added caption inviting people to join my new Facebook Group. From this post, I had an additional few individuals ask for an invitation.

Finally, on my blogger Instagram account, I published a post of the same photo of the group and in the caption I pasted the group description. Following the caption, I added hashtags to broaden the reach of the post. The hashtags I chose were: #facebook, #facebookgroup, #homedecor, #onlinecommunity, #memership, and #newgroup. I believe hashtags can make a big difference in the reach of an Instagram post.

Overall, the first three days of my Facebook Group’s existence have been much more successful than I anticipated. I added group rules, created a group description, and learned to navigate the platform. I have learned that creating and maintaining a successful Facebook Group requires daily effort and attention. I made use of my spare time and went through the “scheduled posts” and added several content posts to the group to be posted at a later date. I have created enough daily content to be automatically posted over the next month so I can work on commenting and overall building a relationship with the members of my community. Each post is interactive including a prompt for members to answer or a poll for them to interact with. I hope this group continues to exceed my expectations as I am unexpected enjoying the process much more than I originally anticipated.
